Vice President, Research Compliance


Van Andel Institute (VAI), an independent biomedical research and science education organization committed to improving the health and enhancing the lives of current and future generations invites nominations and applications for the newly created position of a Vice President, Research Compliance who will provide strategic oversight and coordination of institute research compliance activities that promote the highest standards of ethics, integrity, and responsibility.


The Vice President, Research Compliance provides the research community with continuing education that addresses regulatory issues and challenges, and is responsible for policy development, informational sessions, and other communications that will assist VAI investigators in understanding their ethical and fiduciary responsibilities with respect to their research activities. In addition, the VP Research Compliance ensures that VAI has effective, efficient processes to manage research compliance, policy adherence, data management, and reporting.


Reporting to Chief Scientific Officer Dr. Peter Jones, a pioneer and world leader in the study of cancer epigenetics, the VP Research Compliance works in partnership with the General Counsel and other leaders to enable research undertaken by faculty, staff, postdoctoral scholars, and students at VAI to be conducted in a safe manner, in accordance with the highest standards of integrity, with adherence to strict ethical principles, and in compliance with federal, state, and Institute regulations.


The VP Research Compliance must be an effective communicator who understands both the process of scientific research and the regulatory framework. They must have the ability to collaborate effectively with researchers to enable researchers to pursue their interests while adhering to the state and federal governmental regulations and VAI policies.  Specific qualifications include:


·  Master’s degree or the equivalent combination of education and experience in a scientific field, PhD preferred

·  At least 10 years of relevant experience in a scientific, federal-funded organization, research laboratory or other comparable environment including significant responsibility for research regulatory compliance

·  Advanced level of knowledge regarding U.S. Federal and State research regulations, including knowledge of such regulations as applicable to use of human or animal subjects, export control regulations and guidance regarding responsible conduct of research. Research Compliance Certification (CHRC) preferred.

·  Experience with effectively interpreting regulations and guidance for specific audiences in the spirit of collaboration, customer service, teamwork, and support.

·  Demonstrated organizational skills and independent decision-making ability.

·  Ability to handle sensitive communications with leadership, legal counsel, and regulatory agencies, resolving difficult situations as needed

·  Strong project management and leadership skills
