Johns Hopkins University, Zanvyl Krieger School of Arts & Sciences - Agora Institute Director Search

October 3, 2017

Earlier this year the Johns Hopkins University was thrilled to announce the creation of the Agora Institute, a joint conception between Johns Hopkins and the Stavros Niarchos Foundation to restore the open and inclusive dialogue essential to healthy democracies. With a landmark $150 million gift from the Foundation to the Krieger School of Arts and Sciences, Johns Hopkins has an extraordinary opportunity to create a leading academic and public forum that harnesses cutting-edge research across a range of disciplines to identify, design, and test new mechanisms for strengthening civic engagement worldwide.

We are now excited to be launching the search for the Institute’s inaugural Director. We are seeking an outstanding scholar and leader, with a record of engaging competing viewpoints and a proven ability to forge interdisciplinary pathways for research and education. The Director will work with University faculty and leadership to build the Agora Institute’s faculty, shape its programs, and establish the Institute as a premier locus for analysis, experimentation, and dialogue around civic discourse.

For this important undertaking, we have convened a search committee with members from across the University, charged with conducting a comprehensive international search and assembling a diverse pool of exceptional candidates.

This search will be facilitated by Opus Partners, an executive search firm with strong experience in high-level academic searches, through one of its partners Craig Smith. As the search begins, we encourage you to share your thoughts and confidential nominations directly with the search committee. Please email them at

Our sincere gratitude goes to the search committee members for taking on this responsibility, and to you, the members of the Hopkins community, for modeling the spirit of dialogue and interdisciplinary engagement that will make the Agora Institute a success.
